DONALD MacDOUGALL was brought up in Lochgilphead Mid-Argyll. His father, a Doctor, was also a painter in the Scottish Colourist Tradition. Donald trained at Glasgow School of Art from 1969-1973, specialising in lithography and etching. Following this he worked as an art therapist in the Argyll and Bute psychiatric hospital for a number of years.

Donald is also a touring and recording musician. In 1979 he moved to Edinburgh in pursuit of stimulating employment but also to take advantage of the city’s vigorous art and music scene. For the next 13 years he worked in Community Mental Health, whilst also finding time to paint and make music.

During the 1990’s Donald gradually reduced his involvement in full- time work, whilst increasing his commitment to art and music.

Donald has lived in East Lothian for the past five years and during this time has returned to full time painting. He has exhibited widely and has an increasing amount of work in private collections and had a successful one-man show in 2006 at the Edinburgh Festival.

Donald’s partially abstracted landscapes have been newly inspired by living in East Lothian with its rich rolling countryside, outbursts of woods and the fantastic light of the Firth of Forth skies.
